Beyond the Job Boards: Finding Exciting Work After 60
As someone over 60, finding work can sometimes feel like you’re stuck between two extremes, roles that you’re overqualified for or positions that seem to target younger candidates.
Traditional job sites often push you toward part-time retail or admin work, which might not appeal or make the most of your experience. But here’s the good news… interesting and fulfilling jobs are out there! You just need to look beyond your usual career path and the obvious options.
Since turning 60, I’ve discovered that the most rewarding roles are often the ones you wouldn’t immediately consider. I’ve worked as a film extra, stepping onto sets and enjoying the buzz of production life. I’ve been a wedding registrar, helping couples celebrate one of the biggest days of their lives. I’ve mentored and coached individuals, facilitated group sessions both online and in person, and explored creative outlets like producing social media content, writing, and videography. I’ve even worked as a fractional consultant, offering strategic advice on a flexible basis.
These roles weren’t handed to me by a job board or recruitment agency, they came from exploring areas that weren’t part of my traditional career.
If you stick to your usual industry or only browse the roles listed on job sites, you’re likely to miss out on the opportunities that make the most of your skills and life experience. Many of the most exciting roles are found in less traditional ways, through networking, self-promotion, or tapping into hobbies and interests you might not have considered professional before!
For example, my role as a wedding registrar came from reaching out to my local council, while my videography and content production projects grew from experimenting with new skills. Even being a film extra started with a quick application to a casting agency. None of these opportunities came from a standard job search, but they’ve all been enriching and most importantly… FUN!
In recent years, I’ve focused on exploring digital opportunities. As a digital nomad (currently writing this from Spain) I’ve discovered the freedom that comes with remote work. Running the I’m Not Done Yet community has allowed me to connect with others and explore new ways of working in a digital space. The online world is full of possibilities, from freelance writing and consulting to virtual facilitation and coaching.
What I’m trying to say is…the key to finding interesting jobs after 60 is to step outside your comfort zone!
Think beyond your previous career or what’s being pushed by job sites. Look into new industries, tap into your passions, and don’t be afraid to try something unconventional. It’s amazing what opportunities can open up when you’re willing to explore new paths.
There’s a world of work out there that values experience, creativity, and flexibility, you just have to be willing to go out and find it.
What’s the wackiest work you’ve done?
