Purpose Doesn’t Retire: The Power of Staying Engaged
Yesterday, I had lunch with someone who shared a story that really got me thinking. He’s a man who had a wildly successful career, built a company, sold it in his mid-50s, and became very wealthy. He moved to a magnificent mansion with acres of land and even a stable, a dream for many. He did a bit of consultancy but, by his own admission, retired early.
Now in his late 70s, he told me about a big regret... stepping away from work and the sense of purpose it gave him. He shared how he wished he’d stayed involved in some form of tangible creation or meaningful work, even after stepping back from the demands of his career. Despite all the luxury and freedom, he felt something significant was missing.
His story hit home for me. It wasn’t just about the choices he made; it was a reminder of how purpose can shape our lives. For him, work wasn’t just a way to make money, it was a way to contribute, to create, and to feel part of something bigger.
Hearing his story made me realise how important it is to stay connected to what gives you purpose, no matter your age or stage of life. It’s easy to think of retirement as the ultimate goal, but for many, purpose doesn’t retire with us. Whether it’s creating, mentoring, learning, or building something new, staying engaged matters.
His story also reminded me of the value of listening to others who have walked a similar path. It’s not about copying their journey but learning from their wisdom, both their triumphs and their regrets. His honesty gave me a new perspective on what I want in this next chapter of my life.
So, if you ever have the chance to hear someone’s story, take it! You never know how it might shape yours.
