Too Old for Gigs? No Chance!
I’m in my mid-sixties and have loved going to gigs for as long as I can remember. Recently, though, I’ve noticed some people raising an eyebrow or two when I mention heading to a concert. There’s this unspoken question… “Aren’t you a bit old for that?” My answer? Absolutely not!
Just this year, I caught Bring Me the Horizon live in February and more recently, I went to see Becky Hill. These aren’t exactly “classic” or “oldies” acts, and that’s intentional, I enjoy new music and the energy that live gigs bring. Music has this amazing way of cutting across all age boundaries. The adrenaline of a live show, the atmosphere, and the sheer excitement of being part of something bigger never gets old for me.
Of course, I’m sensible about it. Being a bit older means I’ve picked up some pointers along the way to keep the experience safe and enjoyable. Ear protection is a must, especially with the volume at my kind of gigs. Knowing the venue and planning my way in and out is also important (beating the crowd to the drinks queue), and I always make sure to stay hydrated. These little steps make a big difference, keeping me fit and ready for the next concert on my list!
So, should I stop going to gigs just because I’m “older”? Or is age really just a number when it comes to doing what you love? I’d say it’s all about staying smart and doing what brings you happiness. Music keeps me connected and inspired, so tell me, why would I want to give that up?
What do you think? Does age change how we should enjoy music or view social norms? Or is it all just a matter of how young you feel at heart and what you enjoy?
